Sedbergh Soap Co, which is based in the town, scooped Micro Business of the Year at the national Startups Awards. The ceremony, organised by startups.co.uk in conjunction with Barclays, took place at the Royal Garden Hotel in London.

Founder Dorthe Pratt said: “We have enjoyed fantastic local support from day one when I set up the business in June 2007. To win this and receive national recognition for our hard work is simply amazing.

“The competition was very tough and I am proud of the fact that the judges chose Sedbergh Soap Co. because they felt we had the biggest potential.

“We are already growing at a very fast pace, expanding our facilities and adding more staff.

“I have no doubt that this award will propel us forward. It is a privileged position to be in given the current economic climate.

“We are still a small business but with that comes agility and the ability to respond instantly to market changes.”

Sedbergh Soap Company makes hand-made soap and other natural bath products from sustainable sources without harmful additives, perfume or irritants.

They are ideal for people suffering from eczema or other skin conditions.

They were developed by Dorthe, an eczema sufferer since birth.
