Talks have started at publishers CN Group surrounding its planned restructuring exercise which could lead to the loss of 40 jobs.
The Cumbria-based company – owners of the News & Star – informed staff formally yesterday of the collective redundancy programme that was to be carried out. All staff across the company’s three divisions – publishing, print and radio – will be consulted during the process which includes voluntary redundancy.
It is expected that 27 jobs are at risk at Cumbrian Newspapers and a further 13 at Furness Newspapers Limited, based in Barrow.
The process will continue into late January.
The move comes as the company attempts to address a fall in revenues during 2008 and meet the challenge of a continued recession in 2009.
CN chief executive Robin Burgess said: “I appreciate it is not going to be easy for those involved in this process but I have no doubt that these moves are essential and will be an important part of ensuring the long-term stability of the business.”
n Production of one of Cumbria’s oldest newspapers is to be switched to Lancashire and another paper closed as part of a cost-cutting operation by media group Newsquest.
Eight editorial staff at the Westmorland Gazette, which covers the Kendal area, have been told their jobs are under threat as a result.
